Think fast and answer this question before you scroll down – name the four members of the Jackson 5 other than Michael. Even the most serious music fan might have trouble naming Michael’s four brothers. Beginning in 1969 with “I Want You Back” and continuing in 1970 with “ABC,” “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There,” the Jackson 5 went to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on four consecutive singles. Following more hit singles in the early 1970s, their popularity began to decrease slightly – although they still hit the Top 40 Billboard charts on 12 more occasions, including 4 more Top 10 singles.
In 1976, the band made a move away from Motown Records to Epic Records while also losing one brother and adding another. The band also used the changes to alter their name from the Jackson 5 to the Jacksons. Although the band would never recreate the commercial highs of the early 1970s, the Jacksons still managed to release several more successful hits including “Enjoy Yourself,” “Shake Your Body Down to the Ground” and their 1984 collaboration with Mick Jagger on “State of Shock.”
As Michael’s solo career took off, making him the most successful artist of the 1980s, the family band began to record less frequently. The Jacksons released their final album – 2300 Jackson Street – in 1989. If you’ve ever wondered what happened to the rest of the Jackson 5 (Jackie, Jermaine, Tito, and Marlon), read the list below to see where the music careers landed outside of the family band.
A few final comments – of the four brothers, Jermaine was clearly the most successful and prolific; recording 14 studio albums and releasing 20 singles that made the R&B Top 40. The other three brothers combined released 5 studio albums and had six singles reach the R&B Top 40. In addition, Jermaine was the only one of the four brothers to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart; releasing seven Billboard Top 40 hits. Jermaine also had minor success in the UK and Australia – with three Top 40 singles in each country – as well as an international hit with Pia Zadora with the song “When the Rain Begins to Fall” from the soundtrack to the 1985 film Voyage of the Rock Aliens, going #1 in Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, France and Germany. Jermaine also hit #1 previously in Belgium with 1984’s “Do What You Do.”
