Paul Weller’s Top 10 Hits in the UK

Any fan of 1970s punk or 1980s British pop knows the very well the genius of Paul Weller (aka The Modfather). Beginning in 1977 with their debut single “In the City,” The Jam sent notice to the music world that they were a band to watch. Over the next five years, the Jam would release a flurry of singles and albums that would top the charts in the UK – including 18 UK Top 40 singles. In the US however, the band only achieved cult status by those following UK bands.

Paul Weller would shift from the mod punk sound of the Jam to the more sophisticated pop sound of his next band – The Style Council – with the release of their debut ep in 1983 Introducing the Style Council. Curiously, the ep was released in several countries but not in the UK where some of the songs had already been released as singles. From 1983 to 1989, the Style Council released 16 Top 40 hits in the UK. Once again, as with the Jam, the Style Council would have very limited success in the US with only one Top 40 hit – “My Ever Changing Moods.”

Paul Weller shifted styles once again in 1992 with the release of his self-titled debut solo album. To date, Weller has released 16 solo albums and remains one of the most popular and influential British artists of all time. In fact, his success on the UK charts continues today with all 16 of his solo albums peaking in the Top 10 of the UK Album charts – including six #1 albums. As a solo artist, Weller has released 31 Top 40 UK singles. For those keep counting, Weller has accounted for an astounding 65 Top 40 UK hits.
